Spicy Gathiya Sabzi


How to prepare Gathiya Ki Sabzi | Ganthia nu shaak | Do Pyaza Gathiya Ki Su | Spicy Veg Gathiya Subzi




I'm partaking in a special Gathiya recipe. This is my dad's most favorite recipe. Gathiya is popular Gujarati tea time snacks. It is crunchy, spicy and deep fried molded strips made from gram flour dough. This snack item is easily picked from sweets and snack shops in India.

✏ Ingredients required for Spicy Gathiya Sabzi 


  • 250g Gathiya
  • 4 onions - roughly chopped
  • 3 tomatoes - puree
  • 2tbsp peas - boiled
  • 1 capsicum - finely chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves - coarse paste
  • 1 small piece ginger - coarse paste
  • 3 green chilies - coarse paste 
  • 2tbsp cooking oil




✏ Dry ingredients 

1. Coriander Powder 2tsp
2. Turmeric Powder 1tsp
3. Red chilly Powder 2tsp 
4. Garam Masala Powder 1tsp
5. Salt to taste

✏ Procedure


◾Step 1: Mise en place


✒ Roughly chop the onions

✒ Make tomato puree



✒ Peel the ginger and garlic

✒Make ginger, garlic, green chilies coarse paste.


◾Step 2: Blanching Gathiya




✒ Boil 300 ml water in a cooking pan, add Gathiya into it. Cook for 2 minutes. (Switch off the gas stove). 




The intent of following this process, as it takes out extra oil from Gathiya. Keep in water for 2-3 minutes, then remove from water and keep it aside until called for.


◾Step 3 : Cooking Time

✒ Heat the oil in a frying pan, add cumin seeds, let them splutter. Add the onions and saute them on medium flame for about 3-5 minutes,


✒ Add ginger garlic and green chilies paste, mix well, cook for another 2 minutes.


✒ Add tomato puree, cook for about 5-7 minutes...



✒ Add dry ingredients ie turmeric powder, red chilly powder, coriander powder and salt to taste. Mix and cook for a minute.


✒ Add gathiya, capsicum and peas and half cup water and cook for 5-7 minutes. See to it gathiya looks cooked and at the same time not soggy. It should be crunchy in taste..






✒ Our Gathiya ki sabzi is ready.


✒ Serve hot with chappati.
